As far as the M goes, it's a simple case of geometry.  You can't get a ccd
chip that will handle the oblique rays from a non retrofocus wide angle
lens.  In other words, the lens is too close to the film plane and the rays
at the edges of the image come in at too wide an angle.

This is probably surmountable but why bother? It's easier and cheaper to use
a retrofocus lens instead of coming up with a completely new chip design.

I can't see any reason why a digital R can't be built.
