Geir--

Yes, caustic soda is, I do believe, the same as lye. I guess it's like some
of those varieties of Scotch ... a cultivated taste?

I like my fish raw, as in sushi, or fried, as in catfish. Neither has to be
hammered to be enjoyed! ;-)

Lutefisk is made from dried cod or "lange"i do not know the english word for
this fish,it in the cod family. The cod is dried in open air and later put in
water with"Kaustisk soda"I do not know the english word for this as well.It
is the opposit of acid and after put in water for some time so the "lut" is
gone.It is then cocked in water and served with white sauce or beacon fat
and in Norway with akevit and beer. The only thing i like is the beer.
Geir
PS. dried cod is very good to eat raw if you beat it with a hammer to it is
soft.
