I didn't know it was considered a "slur" (and I'm not sure I do know
either), but it certainly is a derogatory term.

I lived in Pascagoula from 1968-1973, and remember hearing it quite a bit.

To me, it really was synonymous with "hick" or "red neck".  I guess, now
that I think of it, "red neck", "cracker" and "hick" really do apply, at
least to me, to whites.
