Now, if a firkin is 9 gallons, what was the original "stuff" that was being
measured in 9 gallon quantities? Was it the beer? And why is 9 gallons
significant?

Gosh, I guess this is off-topic. We're talking Crackers and Firkins now.

As if I don't get enough "firkin" jokes ;-)but the firkin is an old English
term for 9 gallons: I use only dictionaries which define it in terms of
beer: one defined the firkin as a 9 gallon tub of lard: I resemble that
remark ;-)
