What I hope we'll see in the future are digital camera systems that are designed and built from the ground up, with no concern for compatibility with 35mm legacy equipment. That way, we can use smaller, denser sensors, which will mean smaller, lighter bodies and lenses. Olympus, Nikon, and Minolta are on the right track, with thier digi-ZLR cameras, but the zoom ranges of the permanently affixed lenses are too limited, especially the shorter end of the focal length range. And the wide adapters just degrade the image too much for me. Sure, you can take a photo with a 1Ds that rivals medium format film. But look at the form factor of the thing - a 45 oz body and to get images of good quality at wide apertures, you must use the large, heavy L series lenses. No problem for the studio or local work, but hell to carry a full system (with backups and accessories) while traveling. In fact, with a pair of EOS1Ds bodies, plus batteries and a 16-35, 28-70, 70-200 and accessories (not to mention your Powerbook), you will exceed the maximum allowable carry-on weight for most European airlines.
