The current version is, IMO, speaking subjectively (haven't
done #s).  In my experience, it is not only great at farther
distances but also up close.  

IIRC, the photodo #s on the Summicron-R are very high, if
you believe in that kind of quantitative approach.  Plus,
the R version is a relative bargain.
