I've had the exact same problem.  I sent it in under warrantee, and my
dealer was authorized by Leica to exchange it rather than having them
effect a repair.

The new one I got had a bum focal length ring.  One more exchange and I now
have one that's perfect.  The 3E has its share of mechanical problems, it
would seem.
