Who was it who posted the picture of the farmer in his field? Mark Pope.
Very good and very interesting. The man is such a type that he is a public
monoument. In that sense the picture is no different from Nathan's (I think)
pictures of Lisbon, which reduced the city to a collection of buildings and
statues.

Just as hilliness is overstressed to such an extent as to eliminate all
other types of scenery, the human life of a country disappears to the
exclusive benefit of its monuments. ( Barthes, The Blue Guide)
