Subject: [Leica] John Zimmerman obituary

An excellent obituary of John Zimmerman, famous Sports Illustrated
photog, is in today's Los Angeles Times (8/12/02).

his solutions to difficult photo problems were often amazing, he is
called a "wizard with specialty cameras" and the "godfather of sports
photography at Sports Illustrated."

shown is a multiple exposure high board diver shot, and a pic of
Zimmerman with two Canon VT's with bottom trigger wind (the camera's
viewfinders are not right to be Leica M), and two PRAKTINA cameras with
spring motor winders attached (mounting the Zeiss 180/2.8 Sonnar and
what looks to me to be the Astro Berlin 300). Before the Nikon F was
introduced in 1959, the East German Praktina was the only 35 SLR
generally available with a motor (announced but apparently never
marketed were motors for the rare Japanese Zunow SLR and the 1st Minolta
SLR, the SR2).

If interested, you can access the article at LATIMES.com -- but you do
have to register on line to do so. This weeks Sports Illustrated also
has a tribute to him.

Stephen
