I also own an EOS system. Usually what I do is to better look at what I 
meter with the M than with the EOS this help to select between to exposure 
different by 1/2 (Assuming you use spot metering on the EOS, with the matrix 
metering of SLR, you never know exactly how the processor is interpreting 
the light differences in the scene, so 1/3 is not useful) .
There is still the solution to select intermediate aperture ring by
holding the ring between two stops, but this is not very accurate.

THe other solution is to buy a M7 :-) and use it in Auto mode. You get 
smaller exposure steps than 1/3....
