Add to which (he muses to himself as he does the late night washing-up...)
Poland was once part of Germany, then it was part of the Soviet Union, for
all intents and purposes. Germany was once a collection of small dukedoms,
Archduchies, Principalities and such - was untied for a fairly short period,
divided in two for the post-war period and is now untied again... parts of
France were once part of Germany and parts of Germany were once part of
France. And Ireland was once (for better or for worse) part of Great
Britain, with large emigration to the UK, which continues to this day. As
well, the influence of the EU has led, in many areas to a de-centralization
of power as much as to an evil centralized government, for example in
Scotland and Wales. Similarly in France and Spain.

I don't know how much time you have spent in Europe recently Allan? But the
main place you will find the views expressed that you outline above is on
the Right Wing bulletin boards of the British neo-nazi National Front or the
French followers of Msr. LePen, with their xenophobia and views on a world
Jewish conspiracy worthy of your average American Militia or right wing Oil
Baron. They are not, in my experience the general view in much of Europe,
nor are they anywhere close to an accurate description of what is happening
in Europe.
