If someone hasn't pointed it out this is because Amtrak is at the mercy of
the freight-haulers who have right-of-way over the long-haul trains.

Personally for long trips in the United States a train just doesn't make a
lot of sense to me. I'd rather spend 5 hours crossing the country than five
days. If I wanted to take 5 days I'd drive. That's what BMWs are for, after
all.

Actually I think that to be a US citizen everyone should have to drive I-80
across Nebraska. That's a BIG state.
