G'day Jim,

The roadrace is as much a social event as a true race. The first five to
ten thousand runners are serious runners with major cash prizes for winners.
By the time you get to the thirty thousand number entrant running ability is
limited so there are many walkers by the 9K mark. I got to the race late
this year as we had to send my daughter off for a Duke TIPP function so I
witnessed the last thirty thousand or so entrants. Numbers issued went up
to 90,000+.

As an aside, one of the very last entrants was a very handicapped boy who
was insisting that he finish the race without his wheelchair. So, for many,
the roadrace is a personal challenge to complete and is very difficult for
their level of ability.
