I try not to put any direct pressure on the surface of the lens at all. If brushing the dust off is not enough, I roll up a lens paper, bend it over into a "V", wet the two tips of the "V" with Zeiss or Kodak lens cleaning fluid, and mop the debris away. If just using breath to dampen the lens, I still make a mop out of the lens paper and try to avoid direct pressure on the lens surface. Some folks recommend tearing the lens paper to make a rough tip to the mop. I know, some of you will say that I'm being too careful, but 34 years without a scratch or even a cleaning mark ain't nothin' to sneeze at.
