To explain a little about the time line..... I shot the photos on May 4th, 1988. At that time, I was assigned to cover the story for a newspaper I worked for. The photo editors had sat aside some space for the story, (since the end of the program was nearing the deadline for the paper). Unfortunately, that very same night, there was a large high rise office building fire in downtown Los Angeles, (The First Inter State Bank Building as I recall). The Amnesty story and photos were pushed off the paper by the massive fire. Ironically, after I left the INS office headed back to the paper's lab to process the Amnesty photos, I was rerouted instead to shoot some fast shots of the spectacular fire, which ran the following day. The amnesty story was relagated to a small 3 or 4 inch news column in the paper, without any photos. So the photos went into my "would have been", "could have been" box, and life went on to the next story, and then the next. Soon, the amnesty photos, and my notes were forgotten. I stumbled across the negs a few days ago while scanning some old stuff for archival purposes. I rememberd how much I enjoyed the shoot, and thought about what a good visual story it could have been.... so... I rumanged around, and found my notes, and decided to create the story now. Originally, a reporter covered the story with me, as I did the photos, and I suspect the finished piece would have been much better with a writer... but I did the best I could do with my old notes, and my own limited ability to write. So, the answer to your question is.. the photos were shot in 1988, and the text was written a couple of days ago! :-) Thanks again for looking.
