I have looked at the Canon D60 and D1 (but not Nikon).  I found that while the D60 had good specs, the viewfinder is very small and a bit dark  -- nothing like the D1, EOS-1 or Leica!  I would try them out first.  It is unfortunate that one has to get the pro features to get a good viewfinder.
