Since the demand to know is becoming thunderous, I'll spill: In the days before color photography, b&w photos of Broadway taken at night from skyscrapers showed the buildings on either side of Broadway to be rather dark, illuminated only by the infrequent window of a late worker and rather weak stray light from the surrounding area. In contrast (pun intended), Broadway appeared on the print as a slash of brilliant white light due Broadway being well-lit and overexposure produced when the photographer attempted to get detail in the surrounding buildings. The Great White Way soon became a metaphor for stage stars, success, nightlife, exciting lifestyle, etc. Allan Jeffery Smith wrote: > Is it this? > > http://www.creative-capital.org/whiteway/ - -- To unsubscribe, see http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/unsub.html
