Hi mark,
bring your new friend to this group then.  is he as expert in photo as you ? 
:)))  where is the Leica meeting at ?
As far as I know about M6 baseplate, it has 2 pieces on both end.  waht 
exactly missing ?  this will cost him for replace a newone.  check with 
Ebay.com see they have anything that can be replace his baseplate.
