I don't think BD denied anything.  He merely pointed out that the pictures
were more typical of a south east Asian country than a communist one.  I've
never been to Vietnam so I can't comment on it but the pictures could easily
have been taken in Thailand (except the Ho Chi Minh poster but especially
the Coke advert).

I like the pictures a lot but I can't help thinking that they'd work better
in colour.  This is probably due to the flattening effect that you get on
phot.net with B&W pics though.

I understand what Oliver is seeing.   I traveled to Hanoi in 1999 along with
visiting other countries in the area, Tailand, Maylasia and Singapore.  I
have traveled to Japan, Peoples Republic of China, Hong Kong  and Teipei.

Viet Nam is distinctly different and most typical of a communist country as
is the PRC.  These same characteristics were visible in Eastern Bloc
countries in Europe and in Russia, which I have visited.

Liberal denial does not change the landscape.
