Recently looking through a bunch of Life magazines from the 50s and early 60s I was forced to confront the ugly truth that while magazines certainly used more photo stories back when, a lot of what was published, even in Life, was pretty sad - photos often look setup...and were setup...photos are often amazingly predictable, etc. Sure, there was some really amazing stuff published at times - Smith's Country Doctor certainly holds up - but allot of the run of the mill work was just that... We tend to forget that while the good old days were old, they weren't necessarily all that good..;-) B. I have to say that Tim is being a bit disingenuous here, as I'm inclined to believe that he knows that what Smith did in this, and a number of other photos, would be considered unacceptable by today's standards of photo journalism - assuming they're adhered to.
