Subject: RE: [Leica] Re: Photoshop dilemma...or...were the Glory Days of PJ often pretty sad...?

Actually, let me add a p.s. and a bit of a change of subject.....(I'm
segueing from Smith into this next one....)

Recently looking through a bunch of Life magazines from the 50s and early
60s I was forced to confront the ugly truth that while magazines certainly
used more photo stories back when, a lot of what was published, even in
Life, was pretty sad - photos often look setup...and were setup...photos are
often amazingly predictable, etc. Sure, there was some really amazing stuff
published at times - Smith's Country Doctor certainly holds up - but allot
of the run of the mill work was just that...

We tend to forget that while the good old days were old, they weren't
necessarily all that good..;-)

George - Tim is referring to the fact that Smith grossly manipulated this
image in the darkroom, going so far as to add the saw from another negative.

I have to say that Tim is being a bit disingenuous here, as I'm inclined to
believe that he knows that what Smith did in this, and a number of other
photos, would be considered unacceptable by today's standards of photo
journalism - assuming they're adhered to.

Why? What about this image makes it not a photograph?
