In his Email to me my friend said 5x5 - which struck me as a little
strange - but it may well ahve been a typo....;-)

The Epson 2450 will do 4X5 and is under $400. I
haven't used it for 4X5, but it has done a great job
on 35mm and medium format. I don't know of an
inexpensive one that will do 5X5, but then I don't
know of any 5X5 cameras. Was this a typo? Or did you
mean 5X7?
