You can change the entire "feel" of the lens with the wrong type, or too little or too much. You may need to disassembly the lens mount further to get sufficient access to the helical threads. And if you make the mistake of separating the helical, you may have to spend a long time to get the correct helical threads to engage - it is a multiple-start helical. If you heed those warnings and are still brave enough to proceed, then proceed carefully.
