Damn Kyle that would make any of us weep for our youth! And Kyle your idea
and efforts are commendable.

However me young son, this lad, Scott Squire doesn't need help to go to a
foreign land as he hasn't proven himself at home yet. And I don't mean a
college portfolio which usually are meaningless until he's had time on the
street in his home country and really proven he's an up and comer
photojournalism shooter.

There several questions one should consider:
1/ Is he a Leica using student?

If not, why are we bothering with a non-Leica user? A great idea someone had
of donating a Leica for his use, very commendable. Hell I wish there were
folks around to do that kind of thing when I started with a wife and an
Argus A2!

Look consider this:
Are there homeless people in the USA? Well those of us living on the North
American continent know the answer to that one both for the USA and Canada.
You bet there are, lots of them..

Therefore why should money be used to send this lad off to cope with a
different culture, language barriers and the innumerable other problems of
being in a foreign country he's never encountered and expect him to come
back with magical photography that may or may not help him along the way?

Without leaving his own country he has an absolutely great opportunity to
prove how good he is dealing with his own people who speak his language and
understand him when he speaks.

Is there a problem with this concept?

I had to prove myself at home dealing with other Canadians and home
situations before I was shooting in other countries.

As commendable as your idea is, I think with a 100 days facing this young
lad maybe the test of being a photojournalist student should be, "you find a
film donor for 100 rolls of film and shoot the 100 rolls in one hundred
days!" Then come back to us with what you did and prove your worth
supporting for a trip overseas.

Seems a reasonable challenge to find out if he has the killer instinct to be
a fine photojournalist!
