This is so because of the metering cell. The camera was made not to accept some of the old lenses. The 21 mm. f/4.0, the 21 mm. f/3.4 and the first version of the 28 f/2.8 come to mind. If they would mount, the meter cell would swing out and hit the back of the lens. This would damage both the lens and the meter cell.
