I've installed XP Pro on my home system, and I'm delighted with its
stability, as well as the thumbnail viewing capability of Windows Explorer.

I've upgraded the system disk after installation with no problem. As I
understand it, tt takes several system-level changes to affect the
activation status. This might be triggered by a combination of a system
disk change, a motherboard upgrade and a new processor. I don't think
things like new network cards, DVD drives, sound cards etc. count.

If the system requires reactivation, there is a toll-free number to call at
Microsoft - you explain what you've done, and they will give you a new
52(or whatever)-digit number to enter.

If you're a Windows user, I wouldn't worry too much about this. XP is
plenty good enough to live with the risk of a reactivation hassle.

I've had no problems getting the drivers I needed from the peripheral
manufacturers, but it would be wise to assemble as many XP drivers as
possible before the upgrade. Almost all the drivers needed to be upgraded
in my system.
