Victor,

I am sure some of the eminent Leica historians on the list will give more
detailed info, but as far as I know Leitz/Leica was owned (I do not know if it
was wholly or partially) by some Swiss company/family during the 80s. To my
knowledge, there was never any Leica factory here.

Incidentally, Leica is quite popular here (I guess not surprising given the high
average income in this country). Even many lowly neighbourhood camera stores
carry at least a basic assortment of Leica (an M6, R8, the most popular lenses).
