The flaws in this test include the non-100% viewfinder of the SL but for a first approximation it will do. I used earlier Series VII ELPRO lenses with a cheap adapter from a swap meet junk bin to fit the ELPRO on the E55 lens. The ELPRO VIIb (ELPRO 4 in E55-ese) with the lens at infinity gives an object field about equal to that of the 180mm lens alone at the minium focus distance (longer than the plastic ruler, however). With the same ELPRO and the 180 at its minimum focus distance, the long side of the viewfinder showed ~120mm of ruler. The ELPRO VIIa (a.k.a. ELRPO 3) on the 180 with the 180 at infinity showed about 120mm of ruler in the viewfinder, and just over 70mm in the viewfinder at the minimum focus distance. Preliminary conclusion: ELPRO 3 & 4 with the 180mm Elmar-R will provide a wide range of close-up options with minimal gaps or overlaps to something approaching 1:2 reproduction ratio. Sounds handy.
