In Auto mode, the camera select the appropriate speed in 1/2 stop progression: 1/1000 - 1/750 - 1/500 - 1/375 - 1/250 etc. (and you can read these speeds in the VF. Thus, putting the camera in Auto allow you to have intermediate speed with associated measure.
