It looks like you just positioned yourself there and just waited for someone to walk by. There are not interesting features in the background, nor do the cars in the foreground add anything. The alternate is a much better picture. It does not look too dark for me. Shooting in this kind of light with fast film you cannot expect too much shadow detail. I think what you have is about right.
