> At what age did your girls get interested in darkroom work?

My older daughter wanted to learn at age 9, so I taught her, but her interest has faded. She is now 19 and is a good photgrapher and uses a digital camera and iPhoto.

My younger daughter was dubious until she was about 12 or 13, at which point she wanted to learn carefully and thoroughly. She is now 15 and is a fabulous photographer and a careful, skilled darkroom hand, and has strong preferences for brands of film and paper. She still uses the Nikon FM that I got her when she was 12, and doesn't want a new camera because "I haven't finished learning how to get this camera to do what I want."

I haven't yet let a kid near Xtol. I'm still a little shaky with it myself. The children use HC110 Dilution B.

I think it depends on the kid, but if you start them too early it might not stick. 12 is not too early.
