Indeed they were marketed concurrently, although I don't know about the
amateur/pro spin.

I believe the first M model was the M3 followed by the
less professional M2 (which eventually became more
popular, or so legend has it.) However, I think both
the M3 and M2 were produced concurrently for awhile as
the initial target market for the M2 was the amateur
while the M3 was for the professional.

I was a small child at the time (-; so don't have
firsthand knowledge of this...
