Subject: [Leica] Carry on tripods--rules/regulations/problems?

I find myself debating whether to get the Gitzo 1127/3 section or the 1128/4 
section. At the store, the salesman said the carry on length limit was 22 
inches. Is this the case--or does that refer to the overall bag length? Must 
a tripod be within a bag?
