Mark Twain and Voltaire could write playful criticism and have ordinary people understand it as playfulness. Most of us mortals cannot.

When writing for an audience approaching 2000 people, many of whom do not have English as their first language, it is generally not a good idea to engage in this kind of "having fun". As anyone who has ever lived in an apartment building knows, one person's idea of fun is another person's idea of excessive noise.

In the early days of the BBC, the news readers were required to wear black tie while on the air, because BBC management felt that it helped them speak with the right tone. Maybe everybody on the LUG should imagine that they are dressed for a job interview when they are posting. It might help you post with the right tone.

To all of you: the best response when you see a post that you think is offensive is to ignore it completely. Sit on your hands.
