The 20 1.8 is actually a great deal better than "not bad" in terms of
contrast, flare suppression, sharpness - and the ability to focus down to
about 7 inches from the film plane. The distortion at the edges,
particularly when focused relatively close, is pretty apparent compared to
the M 21 ASPH. But the construction is, as you note, is sad. On the other
hand, when you pay $349 for an ASPH/APO, 21 1.8 AF D lens, you can buy,
what, seven of them? before you will have paid for one Leica M 21 2.8. So at
that price, the construction isn't that much of an issue.

<Actually, I do use the Sigma 20 1.8 for film and it is surprisingly good -
<no, it's not an M 21 ASPH - but what is? - and it is 1.5 stops faster.
<(Built like an oatmeal box, though.;-))

I had in the past some Sigma lenses: 28-70 f1:2.8, 400mm f1:5.6 and a
strange zoom 135-400. The optical quality was never a problem , not in Leica
or CZ league of course, they were not bad lenses but the construction
quality was so bad...
