Not only is war "natural," but it is a "good" thing. It sweeps out the old
and brings in the new.It creates new channels of communication, new patterns
of growth.

Right - That's why in every war in modern history the generals and their
pupetmasters have been prepared to fight the previous war....

Face it, war is indeed hell. And it's inevitability, if it is as inevitable
as it seems, hardly makes it good in any way shape or form. Painfully
necessary on rare occassion, but good?

But I will now behave and absent myself from any continuation of this thread
as I know full-well it really doesn't belong on this list, even if some
truly great war photography has been done with Leicas.....;-)

It is the central process of history. It is the most important
single undertaking of civilization, which is why it commands the single
largest expenditure of civilization. Individuals may spend more on food and
shelter, but when those same folks combine, they spend they pool their money
and spend it on war or preparations for war.
