The problem with using f/2.8 or thereabouts is that focusing must be 
precise. Something which is definitely a challenge at a basket ball game. 
Actually any sporting event. In a team sport, even AF gets confused as 
there are too many bodies moving too fast for AF to know how to focus much 
of the time.

Use faster film. Fuji 800 the can easily be pushed to 1600 and gives good 
color in strange lighting and will allow you to use an f/stop that will 
give some DOF.
