Wow!  I didn't know store owners weren't allowed to shoot!!

I have shot a lot of Rock & Roll stuff over the past fifteen years and really like the excitement that it can produce in the images.  As far as stage lighting goes, it has always been a challenge to get it "just right", I prefer to shoot without flash because it allows for the colors to be more vivid but it can also lead to "that red
look" in performance shots.  I have found the solution to that problem to be "slow sync" flash, where the flash acts as a fill.  I rated the D1x at 640ASA, put the SB 28D on TTL, set the camera to Manual and picked either 1/30 or 1/60s @ F8 and "slow sync" flash.  Most of the shots came out perfect...especially those with a little bit of
motion to them.    I was surprised at how well the D1x handeled all the light changes and multiple hot spots, even the "noise factor" was very acceptable.   I fed the R8 with Provia 400F and put it on Aperture priority and spot metering, that worked like a charm also.
