There's also the fact that our charming government rehabs various members of the SS to use them in our anti-commie post war efforts. But none of that means that I have to forgive, overlook, or wink at Leni as the producer of Triumph of The Will.....To me she will always be a Nazi Bitch - to coin a term ;-) - and I don't think her art should ever be discussed, considered, judged, except in the context of her politics and actions. By the Allies (as well as the German people) to suit their own aims - along with the likes of Werner Braun (my dad was on the receiving end of both a V1 ( not Werners) and a V2 during the war... yet is still a fan of Braun...). they did it because it was expedient to re-build Germany and face the Cold War menace - guilt - what's that! and soon it was forgive and forget time. Some industrialist who were major Nazi party figures were back at work in a few years and allowed to retire in time as valued members of society.... (waiting for marc here with the full facts!)
