Do a search on "split filter printing."  That might help.

Burn the heck outta the bright/dense side.  If you can figure out what
exposure you need for each half, you're almost there!

How do you remedy it in the future?  Fill flash.  Light your shadow side so
that it isn't so much darker than the highlight side.  Gotta reduce the
overall contrast.  Maybe draw the shades partway.
