Rei, you pick zone ten or d-max precisely because this should be maximum
black.  You can't use a leader because even in minimal development it will
go black, you want an exposure that will with proper development be d-max
but if there are problems with the developer may not be.

You pick zone III because you want a developed exposure that shows some
detail and zone V because the midtones make the image.  In other words, you
are testing to make sure that your developer system is consistent and is
delivering what it is supposed to; and if it isn't some diagnosis as to what
is wrong so it can be fixed inexpensively and with repeatability.
