Over the years -- my years include newspaper photojournalism, corporate publications and anything-that-pays freelancing -- BEING THERE has paid off pretty well. Good jobs turned up 'cuz I was somewhere with a camera. Have also missed opportunities 'cuz I was somewhere sans camera. If news photography interests you, look at the number of Pulitzers and highly iconized images that are the simple result of someone -- a camera user, hobbyist or tourist -- BEING THERE. Yeah, you've got to hone, whet and develop your photo skills, but you can do that in a whole lot of ways less painful to your budget, being and, perhaps, family, than dropping what you're doing and immersing yourself in school. Think about what you want from photography, as others have suggested. Go from there. Embrace and move toward photography; don't simply run from a job you're sick of. You might find that's only the start a long, lousy race.
