Because background is _not_ non-essential. Actually it makes out far more area on your photograph than the main subject, especially if you shoot people. It always pays to be sensitive to the background. Get's you nicer pictures. If you only pay attantion to the main subject, one day telephone poles will grow out of their heads ...
