In some cases it's needed and can give you that look, I find in most it is not. If you want to keep your low contrast areas looking smooth and not spotty the 3-5 range will almost always look better. An edge should be well separated tone-wise from its background, right? My slides are mainly very low light=wide open aperture=lots of OOF areas which I don't want to look like weetabix. This is a quick fix however. The better option is probably John Brownlow's bodacious smart sharp, which needs quite a bit of manual tweaking though, IMO. Anyone who knows me well will tell you I'm a sucker though.
