I have compared the modular 400F2.8 with a 2X APO teleconverter with a straight modular 800F5.6. The 800 is sharper. Colour and contrast are pretty close. The other advantage is also speed when you only have the 280F2.8 with converters to get to longer focal length. 780F7.8 mm is the max you go. Imagine 800 stacked with 1.4X and 2X. This are extreme cases when you need it, but I needed it to shoot a pair of nesting endangered Grey Headed Fish-eagles which I coudnt and did not want to get close to. We were separated by a lake. I will be able to do some comparison when I recieved my telyt 560F6.8. And for just a quarter-zillion more, can't you get a Telyt head and focus module and then have the benefit of expanding to other focal lengths for much less money? <<< I dun't know about the 400 f/2.8 setup but the non-modular 280 f/2.8 plus the APO 1.4 and 2x extenders will get you the same focal lengths and apertures as the 280/400/560 head with the 1x, 1.4x and 2x focus modules, plus the non-modular extenders can be used on other lenses too. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see the advantages of the modular system.
