It was a "must have" for them. E.g. the first 1.4/35 aspherical is still commanding high prices, despite the cheaper, and easily available 1.4/35 asph. Those who paid the list price of the old 2.8/35-70, eventually plus a 10% or 20% premium, to get a user lens will be disappointed, of course.
