i personally think wrapping is the author's responsibiltiy and 72 is
almost always a useful base value for line length.

but brian, you mail lessages don't normally look the way you sent your
last one... you usually DO wrap your mail!

and it makes a mess when you "quote" a message, as below.

but who am i to argue with brian k reid!
