It was a pretty tame set of demonstrations overall, but a good photo-op nonetheless. I had a number of close encounters of the Leica kind, including Bernard from this list (sorry Bernard, I didn't get your last name). I also met a Canadian photog who had returned from Paris. He had quit a job in high tech to try and make a living selling pitchas. Good luck to him :-/ At least he was using good gear - a chrome M6TTL with a Motor-M and a new collapsible 50 Elmar. At one point there were four M6 users standing grouped together at one side of a police cordon. Between us we had 6 M6's - I've never seen so much Leica gear out in public in my life. Needless to say, we all gave each other the international Leica recognition sign. This consists of extending the index finger and thumb of the right hand to make the holy "L", and placing this sign on your forehead... I used two bodies and two lenses. The .58 with a 3E and a motor was absolutely ideal for this kind of shooting. The .85 with the 90 AA was used to get portrait-style shots of protestors and police. I took along a 135, but only used it for one shot (a pic of a takedown that's on the web page). If I ever do this again, I will make two gear changes. I'll get a motor for the second body (I love those little zippers), and I'll lose the 135. Everything was shot on Provia 400F. I only found one shot that I think works better as b&w. I need more practice getting my exposures right in this kind of situation. The action was fast, the lighting in the narrow streets was tricky, and the black police uniforms threw off the metering occasionally. I found I have a tendency to underexpose, which does not do good things for black uniforms on slide film. Anyway, enjoy - comments and critiques are welcome.
