Mitch,

I cannot speak about the 70-180mm from personal experience, but I do have
the 35-70mm and it is simply the best zoom lens I have ever owned.

Of course, wide open is not that open with this lens, but I find that with
an SLR it matters less. I shoot mostly landscapes and other inaminate
objects with my R8 and SL, and most of the time I want more depth of field
than f4 provides.
