Why do it in a first order? :-)

Meter the ground, then correct accordingly. Even better - measure your
hand - no it doesn't need to be sharp to be metered ;-). Even better:
meter Kodak Gray Card...

Ersatz surface should be lighted in a similar way that final subject is, by the way.

Why are you asking such a difficult questions? :-)
