Rei RADM Byrd wasn't at the South Pole but about a thousand miles to the North, in Little America. The book is a magnificent read, especially the part where, after he's been alone for some months, he suddenly realizes he is READING AT THE DINNER TABLE and wondering what his mother would think of such relaxation of her Virginia standards! The Richmond, Virginia, airport used to be Byrd Municipal Field but the local buffoons renamed it, "Richmond International Airport" some years back. All the highway signs say, "RIC" but the locals, bless their conservative hearts, still call it, "Byrd Field".
